The Invisalign® system uses a series of clear plastic trays to align teeth to the proper position. Just as with traditional orthodontics, patients first come in for a comprehensive assessment, after which a course of treatment can be determined. Next, moulds of the patient’s teeth are taken and sent to a lab where the clear aligners are constructed. Once the trays are ready for use, the patient returns to the office, and the dentist will fit the trays to ensure proper positioning. From that point forward, the trays apply gentle pressure to the teeth, working toward the best possible alignment.
Invisalign® offers patients a clear alternative when it comes to determining their orthodontic needs. With traditional braces, a system of metal brackets and wires is applied within the mouth and then periodically adjusted by a dental professional. Brackets can break, and wires will almost certainly come loose at some point during treatment. This requires an additional office visit to address these issues. Also, brushing and flossing become even more complicated once traditional braces are in place because food can become lodged around the brackets and wires. With Invisalign®, clear aligners are worn throughout the day and night but can be removed for eating, brushing, flossing, and so on.
There are certain cases in which Invisalign® does not offer the best possible orthodontic approach. This is why the first step toward any orthodontic service is a comprehensive physical exam. At that point, the dentist will examine both the condition and placement of a patient’s teeth before a determination is made. If there are dental issues at play within the patient’s mouth, such as cavities or other causes for concern, then these items will need to be addressed prior to beginning orthodontic treatment. However, there are very few cases in which a patient cannot achieve a straighter, healthier smile using Invisalign®.
